Within Islam there are many herbs, plants and fruits that are believed to have medicinal and healing properties. Indigenous to the Mediterranean region, the black seed plant (Nigella Sativa) has been used medicinally by Muslims and non-Muslims alike for hundreds of years. In fact the earliest written reference to the black cumin is in the book of Isaiah in the Old Testament where Isaiah talks of the harvesting of the black seed. It was also mentioned in the Bible as the curative ‘black seed’ and has been used by Asian herbalists and the Romans for culinary purposes. However it never really held any place of importance until the rise of Islam.

A Cure For All Things

Within Arabo-Islamic culture, the black seed has been prescribed for various ailments including fever, asthma, chronic headaches, diabetes, digestion, back pain, infections and rheumatism. In fact, since its rise in popularity in the Seventh century the black seed has remained a staple of family medicine within the Muslim world. The black seed is believed to have 100 components and is a significant sources of fatty acids, proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals.

Studies have confirmed numerous pharmacological benefits. Black cumin seeds are also called Nigella sativa seeds. These seeds have anti-diabetic and anti-cancer properties. They can be used to regulate the immune system, reduce pain, kill microorganisms, reduce inflammation, inhibit spasmodic activity, and open the tiny air passages in the lungs. I will be reporting on several recent black cumin seed studies covering other important health topics. I will review studies that investigated the use of black cumin seed oil for helping with obesity, balancing blood chemistry, reducing inflammation, supporting healthy immune system functioning, and alleviating nasal dryness and discomfort.
Black Cumin Seeds are Highly Ranked as a Powerful Herbal Medicine

Researchers from Saudi Arabia recently reviewed scientific research on the benefits of using black seeds as an herbal medicine. They discussed the miraculous healing power of Nigella sativa and its prominent position among herbal medicines. Its high ranking is based on scientific evidence. Most of the therapeutic properties of this plant are linked to thymoquinone which is the major bioactive component of the essential oil contained in the seeds and in black cumin seed oil. [2]
Black Seeds are Useful as an Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory Treatment

Black seeds have been employed for thousands of years as a spice and food preservative.

Black seed oil and seed constituents have shown potential medicinal properties in traditional medicine.

Scientific research provides clear evidence that both the oil and its active ingredients, such as thymoquinone, possess antioxidant effects. This is accomplished by enhancing the oxidant scavenger system, which has a detoxifying effect.

The oil and thymoquinone have potent anti-inflammatory effects on several experimental models of inflammation. These include: encephalomyelitis (inflammation of the brain and spinal cord after infection) colitis (inflammation of the colon), peritonitis (inflammation of the membrane which lines the inside of the abdomen and all of the internal organs), edema (the swelling of soft tissues as a result of excess fluid accumulation), and arthritis. Black seed oil and certain of its active ingredients showed a beneficial ability to regulate the immune system. It supported T-cell and natural killer cell-mediated immune activity. Most importantly, both black seed oil and its active ingredients expressed antimicrobial and anti-tumor properties toward different microbes and cancers. [4]

Many diseases involve inflammation, for example, cystic fibrosis, allergies and cancer.

The free radicals produced during inflammation can induce gene mutations and modifications of cancer related proteins.

The seeds and the oil have many pharmacological effects including antibacterial, antifungal, anti-tumor, analgesic and antipyretic activity.

This study investigated the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity of black seeds used with acute inflammation. An animal model was used. They induced a strong inflammatory response and then measured the different effects for the group that were treated with black seed oil and those who were not treated. They concluded that black seeds had therapeutic and antioxidant effects. [5]
Black Seeds are Useful for Treating Obesity

Obesity is closely associated with an increased incidence of cardiovascular diseases, cancer, insulin resistance, and immune dysfunction.

Thus obesity-mitigation strategies should take into account these secondary pathologies in addition to promoting weight loss. Recent studies indicate that black cumin (Nigella sativa) has cardio-protective, anti-cancer, anti-diabetic, antioxidant, and immune-modulatory properties.

Given the growing interest in and the use of functional foods and nutraceuticals, as well as the increase in obesity and chronic diseases worldwide, further research into the therapeutic/preventive effects of black cumin will be beneficial. [6]

Researchers identified obesity as being the most prevalent health problem affecting all age groups. It leads to chronic heart disease, diabetes mellitus type 2, and stroke. Researchers reviewed the abstracts for 33 scientific articles related to obesity, herbal medicine, and traditional medicine. They found that black seeds, green tea, and black Chinese tea had anti-obesity effects. [7]

A study conducted by Iranian researchers examined the effects of long-term Nigella sativa supplementation and the use of aerobic training on the lipid profile and oxygen consumption of sedentary overweight women.

This was a randomized double-blind controlled trial. Twenty sedentary overweight females were divided into two groups and assigned to black seed supplementation or a placebo for the 8 weeks of the study. Both groups participated in aerobic training 3 times per week. Blood lipids and VO2 max were determined before the experiment began and at the end of 8 weeks. VO2 max is a measurement of the maximum amount of oxygen that a person can use when exercising. Higher levels of oxygen consumption are associated with higher levels of physical fitness. The women who took the placebo and who did aerobic training experienced reductions in total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol, and increased VO2 max. The women who used Nigella sativa supplementation and aerobic training experienced reductions in total cholesterol, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein, and body mass index (ratio of fat to muscle). The women lost body fat and gained muscle. Black seed supplementation also increased high density lipoprotein and VO2 max. The researchers concluded that the combination of 8-weeks of aerobic training and Nigella sativa supplementation had a synergistic effect, and the combination of black seed consumption and aerobic training produced the greatest health benefit. Black Seeds are Useful for Nasal Dryness and Nasal Discomfort

Turkish researchers worked with geriatric patients who had nasal dryness and related nasal symptoms.

They compared the effects of using black seed oil in the nasal passages of the nose to the use of a salt water solution.

Researchers found that nasal dryness, obstruction and crusting improved significantly with the use of black seed oil compared to salt water treatment. They noted that there was no significant difference between the effect of black cumin seed oil and salt water on nasal burning and itching. Researchers concluded that black seed oil is a better alternative for treating nasal mucosal symptoms due to aging. [11]

Black cumin seeds have been used in the Middle East for thousands of years, and it is easy to see why the seeds and oil are gaining popularity today in Western countries as well.

Turmeric, is a rhizome (A type of horizontal, usually underground stem that sends out roots and shoots from its nodes; AKA as a rootstock.)  It’s related to ginger root (also a rhizome) both are classified as members of the Zingiberacaea family; it has been a stellar staple in the pharmacopeia of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and Ayurvedic medicine for eons; It’s been in continuous use for thousands of years as a medicine, spice (curry) and yellow dye.

 

 

Curcumin and Curcuminoids

Curcumin (diferuloylmethane) is the yellow pigment found in the spice turmeric (Curcuma longa). Curcumin is one of three known curcuminoids present in turmeric, the other two being desmethoxycurcumin and bis-desmethoxycurcumin.

 

Scientists have still not identified all the constituents in turmeric. Researchers continue to discover new curcuminoids. Current estimations are that turmeric contains well over a hundred chemical compounds which are primarily located in the essential oil of this complex medicinal spice.

 

A major problem with Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is curcumin’s (CUR) low bioavailability. Curcumin is the key active constituent of Turmeric.  A preponderance of animal and clinical studies reveal that the concentrations of CUR in blood plasma, urine, and peripheral tissues, if detectable at all, are extremely low regardless of dosage size.

What is Bioavailability?

According to the Merck manual, “Bioavailability refers to the extent to and rate at which the active moiety (drug or metabolite) enters systemic circulation, thereby accessing the site of action.”

 

Essentially, bioavailability is about how much of an ingested substance is actually absorbed by our bodies. It follows that substances with poor bioavailability will not be effective for healing purposes.

 

Research Confirms Turmeric’s Low Bioavailability

Key Points:

Numerous curcumin studies confirm that very low blood serum levels are reached when curcumin is orally administered. The majority of orally ingested curcumin gets metabolized before it reaches the bloodstream. Increasing the dose does not result in greater absorption.

The route of administration and method of preparation are major factors affecting the bioavailability or serum levels of turmeric.

Turmeric’s bioavailabity can be enhanced with the addition of specific Adjuvants.

 

Studies

Low Serum Concentratiions

A study on the fate of curcumin in the rat (1978) by Whalstrom and Blennow showed oral curcumin was poorly absorbed in the gut. When 1g/kg of curcumin was orally administered to the rats only a negligible amount of curcumin was found in their blood plasma. About 75% of it was excreted via the feces.

 

A study in 1980 by Ravindranath et al found when rats were orally administered 400 mg of curcumin, no trace of curcumin was found in the heart blood while only a small trace was found in the portal blood within 15 min to 24 hours of administration.

 

Another recent study by Yang et al found that when 10 mg/kg of curcumin was orally administered only 0.36 µg/ml of curcumin was found in the blood serum.

 

A pilot study conducted by Sharma et al. on patients with colorectal cancer. The patients were given Curcuma extract which contained 36–180 mg curcumin in proprietary capsule for 4 months. After 29 days of oral curcumin: Neither curcumin nor its metabolites were detected in the plasma, blood and urine. Although traces of curcumin and curcumin sulfate were found in feces.

 

Tissue Distribution

In another study: Absorption and tissue distribution of curcumin in rats. Ravindranath et al found after orally administering 400 mg of curcumin to rats: “only traces of the unchanged molecule were found in the liver and kidney. At 30 min, 90% of the curcumin was found in the stomach and small intestine, but only 1% was present at 24 h. [hours].”

NOTE: Very few studies have been done on Curcumin and tissue distribution.

 

Metabolites

Metabolites are the intermediate and final products of the process known as metabolism, which is from the Greek word for “change.” Metabolism is a step-wise series of life-sustaining chemical transformations within the cells of living organisms. The term metabolites commonly refer to small molecules.

 

Primary metabolites are necessary for the normal growth and maintenance of life. Secondary metabolites support primary metabolite activity indirectly and serve other important ecological functions. Metabolites are a natural occurrence formed when as part of an inherent biological process that breaks down and eliminates various compounds.

Research indicates that metabolites of curcumin, instead of curcumin itself, are detected in plasma or serum following oral consumption.

 

The majority of studies have shown that these metabolites are actually less active or potent compared to curcumin itself.
Bottom Line: when curcumin is metabolized the potency of its metabolites are less potent than curcumin.

 

The intestine and liver, is where oral curcumin is conjugated (the formation of a water-soluble derivative of a chemical by its combination with another compound, such as glutathione, glucuronate, or sulfate.) into metabolites.

 

Based on various studies the metabolites produced are: curcumin glucuronides and curcumin sulfates or, alternately, reduced to hexahydrocurcumin(HHC) and Tetrahydrocurcumin (THC). Again most studies have shown that these metabolites are less biologically active compared to the parent compound curcumin.

 

Short Half-life

Half-life is the time it takes for a drug or other ingested substance to lose half its strength. Medications with a short half-life must be taken several times a day, to maintain therapeutically effective concentrations of blood serum levels.
In contrast, medications with longer half lives maintain effective blood serum levels for much longer periods of time and can be taken less frequently.

 

The studies by Whalstrom and Blennow demonstrated curcumin’s rapid systemic excretion from the body or short half-life. As mentioned when 1g/kg curcumin was given orally to rats  around 75% of the curcumin was excreted via the feces with only trace amounts found in the urine.  A short half -life decreases Turmeric’s therapeutic effect in the body. More studies are needed in order to draw  definitive conclusions about Turmeric’s half-life.

Black Pepper’s Side-effects

One Study entitled: Influence of piperine on the pharmacokinetics of curcumin in animals and human volunteers

Manuka honey Kills Every Kind of Bacteria Scientists Could Throw At It

Manuka honey is created by bees foraging on the nectar of Leptospermum Scoparium, the New Zealand manuka bush, as well as tea trees native only to Australia and New Zealand.

In the aforementioned studies, Australian researchers found that the honey killed every bacteria or pathogen it was tested on, according to a report by The AustralianThe honey can be applied topically to help fight against infections of the skin, cuts and insect bites, or taken internally.

The most exciting difference with the manuka honey that was tested is that none of superbugs killed by the honey were able to build up immunity, a common problem with today’s antibiotics.

“New antibiotics tend to have short shelf lives, as the bacteria they attack quickly become resistant,” said Dr. Dee Carter of the University of Sydney’s School of Molecular and Microbial Biosciences. “Many large pharmaceutical companies have abandoned antibiotic production because of the difficulty of recovering costs. Now, a new study published in the Pharmacognosy Magazine titled, “Curcumin attenuates neurotoxicity induced by fluoride: An in vivo evidence,” adds experimental support to the suspicion that fluoride is indeed a brain-damaging substance…

Fluoride’s neurotoxicity has been the subject of academic debate for decades, and now a matter of increasingly impassioned controversy among the general public, as well. From ‘conspiracy theories’ about it being first used in drinking water in Russian and Nazi concentration camps to chemically lobotomize captives, to its now well-known IQ lowering properties, to its ability to enhance the calcification of the pineal gland – the traditional ‘seat of the soul’ – many around the world, and increasingly in the heavily fluoridated regions of the United States, are starting to organize at the local and statewide level to oust this ubiquitous toxicant from municipal drinking water.

The researchers identified the primary polyphenol in the spice turmeric — known as curcumin – as an ideal agent worth testing as a neuroprotective substance.  Previous research on curcumin indicates that it is capable of acting as an antioxidant.

In order to assess the neurotoxic effects of fluoride and prove curcumin’s protective role against it, researchers randomly divided up mice into four groups, for 30 days:

1. Control (no fluoride)
2. Fluoride (120 ppm): fluoride was given in distilled water drinking water without restriction.
3. Fluoride (120 ppm/30 mg/kg body weight) + Curcumin: Oral dose of curcumin dissolved in olive oil along with fluoride in drinking water
4. Curcumin: (30 mg/kg body weight)

In order to ascertain the effect of treatment, the researchers measured the malondialdehyde (MDA) content in the brains of the different treated mice. MDA is a well-known marker of oxidative stress/damage.

As was expected, the fluoride (F) only treatment group showed significantly elevated MDA levels vs. the non-fluoride treated control. The F + Curcumin group saw reduced MDA levels vs. the fluoride only group, demonstrating curcumin’s neuroprotective activity against fluoride associated neurotoxicity.

The study concluded, “Our study thus demonstrate that daily single dose of 120 ppm F result in highly significant increases in the LPO [lipid peroxidation, i.e. brain rancidity] as well as neurodegenerative changes in neuron cell bodies of selected hippocampal regions. Supplementation with curcumin significantly reduce the toxic effect of F to near normal level by augmenting the antioxidant defense through its scavenging property and provide an evidence of having therapeutic role against oxidative stress mediated neurodegeneration.”

The seeds of the annual flowering plant, Nigella Sativa, have been prized for their healing properties since time immemorial.  While frequently referred to among English-speaking cultures as Roman coriander, black sesame, black cumin, black caraway and onion seed, it is known today primarily as black seed, which is at the very least an accurate description of its physical appearance.

The earliest record of its cultivation and use come from ancient Egypt. Black seed oil, in fact, was found in Egyptian pharoah Tutankhamun’s tomb, dating back to approximately 3,300 years ago. In Arabic cultures, black cumin is known as Habbatul barakah, meaning the “seed of blessing.” It is also believed that the Islamic prophet Mohammed said of it that it is “a remedy for all diseases except death.”

Many of black cumin’s traditionally ascribed health benefits have been thoroughly confirmed in the biomedical literature. In fact, since 1964, there have been 458 published, peer-reviewed studies referencing it. These 22 pharmacological actions are only a subset of a far wider number of beneficial properties intrinsic to the black seed. While it is remarkable that this seed has the ability to positively modulate so many different biological pathways, this is actually a rather common occurrence among traditional plant medicines.

Black seed has been researched for very specific health conditions. Some of the most compelling applications include:

  • Type 2 Diabetes: Two grams of black seed a day resulted in reduced fasting glucose, decreased insulin resistance, increased beta-cell function, and reduced glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in human subjects.
  • Helicobacter Pylori Infection: Black seeds possess clinically useful anti-H. pylori activity, comparable to triple eradication therapy.
  • Epilepsy: Black seeds were traditionally known to have anticonvulsive properties. A 2007 study with epileptic children, whose condition was refractory to conventional drug treatment, found that a water extract significantly reduced seizure activity.
  • High Blood pressure: The daily use of 100 and 200 mg of black seed extract, twice daily, for 2 months, was found to have a blood pressure-lowering effect in patients with mild hypertension.
  • Asthma: Thymoquinone, one of the main active constituents within Nigella sativa (black cumin), is superior to the drug fluticasone in an animal model of asthma. Another study, this time in human subjects, found that boiled water extracts of black seed have relatively potent antiasthmatic effect on asthmatic airways.
  • Acute tonsillopharyngitis: characterized by tonsil or pharyngeal inflammation (i.e. sore throat), mostly viral in origin, black seed capsules (in combination with Phyllanthus niruri) have been found to significantly alleviate throat pain, and reduce the need for pain-killers, in human subjects.
  • Chemical Weapons Injury: A randomized, placebo-controlled human study of chemical weapons injured patients found that boiled water extracts of black seed reduced respiratory symptoms, chest wheezing, and pulmonary function test values, as well as reduced the need for drug treatment.
  • Colon Cancer: Cell studies have found that black seed extract compares favorably to the chemoagent 5-fluoruracil in the suppression of colon cancer growth, but with a far higher safety profile. Animal research has found that black seed oil has significant inhibitory effects against colon cancer in rats, without observable side effects.
  • MRSA: Black seed has anti-bacterial activity against clinical isolates of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus.
  • Opiate Addiction/Withdrawal: A study on 35 opiate addicts found black seed as an effective therapy in long-term treatment of opioid dependence.

Sometimes the biblical reference to ‘faith the size of a mustard seed moving mountains’ comes to mind in connection with natural substances like black seeds. After all, do seeds not contain within them the very hope for continuance of the entire species that bore it?  This super-saturated state of the seed, where life condenses itself down into an intensely miniaturized holographic fragment of itself, promising the formation of future worlds within itself, is the very emblem of life’s immense and immortal power.

The time, no doubt, has come for food, seeds, herbs, plants, sunlight, air, clean water, and yes, love, to assume once again their central place in medicine, which is to say, the art and science of facilitating self-healing within the human body. Failing this, the conventional medical system will crumble under the growing weight of its own corruption, ineptitude, and iatrogenic suffering (and subsequent financial liability) it causes. To the degree that it reforms itself, utilizing non-patented and non-patentable natural compounds with actual healing properties, a brighter future awaits on the horizon. To the degree that it fails, folks will learn to take back control over their health themselves, which is why black seed, and other food-medicines, hold the key to self-empowerment.

Today, activated charcoal is in most hospital ERs and many emergency vehicles as a fast, effective antidote for poisons of all types. It is considered safe and effective by the FDA, and it’s inexpensive. Very few know of this amazing natural antidote, and even less know of its general detoxifying capacity. And it can be used to whiten teeth better than anything.

Explaining Activated Charcoal

Don’t confuse activated charcoal with charcoal briquettes for barbecuing or anything else. Those contain toxic chemicals and carcinogens. Using the powder form of activated charcoal is what’s recommended. It’s easy to ingest as a fine powder in water. It’s tasteless, though a tad gritty. It is derived from burning pure, untainted organic substances, such as coconuts or certain woods, without using chemicals in the process. You can get a one pound bag for around $10.00 US.

Dr. Al Sears, MD, has his patients use it for detoxing even heavy metals, and he uses it himself. For heavy metal detoxifying, he recommends a total of 20 grams per day, spaced apart in two to four doses, over a 12 day period.

The action of activated charcoal  involves adsorption, not absorption, of toxins from the intestinal tract. Adsorption is the electrical attraction of toxins to the surfaces of the fine charcoal particles. The charcoal itself is not absorbed into the body, so the toxins attached to the charcoal particles exit via the bowels. Don’t be surprised by black stools.

Dispelling Rumors and Controversy

The controversy on ingesting activated charcoal is based on the notion that it also robs the body of nutrients. According to several solid sources, this is misinformation. Pharmaceutical medicines, which tend to be toxic, are removed partially or wholly, and nutrients from synthetic vitamin sources tend to be removed also. But not food nutrients.

It’s actually better to take the activated charcoal two hours away from food, because food hampers the charcoal’s detox activity.

This comes from the 1980 book Activated Charcoal by David O. Cooney:

Charcoal added to the diet of sheep for six months did not cause a loss of nutrients, as compared with sheep not receiving charcoal. (…) A level of 5 % of the total diet was given as charcoal. It did not affect the blood or urinary levels of calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, inorganic phosphorus, potassium, sodium, zinc, creatinine, uric acid, urea nitrogen, alkaline phosphatase, total protein or urine pH.

Another rumor has it that activated charcoal causes constipation. This is only if you’re already blocked a bit, but it doesn’t cause it. As with any type of detox, one needs to be free of blockages to eliminate easily. Drinking more water and taking swig of pure organic Castor oil will usually take care of that. Diarrhea occasionally occurs as a temporary detox side effect.

But the common notion that many cling to is that drinking activated charcoal only removes toxins from the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. In an earlier article regarding clinoptilolite zeolite powder, which action is the same as activated charcoal’s, I had explained how the villi within the small intestines do the work of detoxing the whole body.

The surface area of the villi, small tube like appendages on the inner walls of small intestines, is sufficient to cover the area of a tennis court. The villi have blood circulating through them, and they capture the nutrients from the food that has been processed in the GI tract into the bloodstream that nourishes organ tissue cells.

Conversely, while they’re coated with the fine powder of activated charcoal, toxins in the blood are adsorbed by the powder and eliminated with your bowel movements. This is why it should be taken away from food. You want the small intestines to be as empty as possible so the exchange of blood toxins to activated charcoal is not blocked.

Keep It Around for Emergencies

Even if you’re not keen on using activated charcoal for general or heavy metal detox purposes, it would be wise to have it on hand in a sealed glass jar for those accidental sips or bites of poisonous substances and venomous insect and snake bites. It is quick to prepare, easy to take, and inexpensive as a powder.

Dr. Al Sears thinks capsule amounts are too small and those little capsule containers create another hurdle if you’re attempting a heavy detox, but they may come in handy for intervening in an acute poisonous episode.

Getting enough hydrogen peroxide inside the cancer cells is key

It has been clinically demonstrated that the spread or metastatis of cancer is “inversely proportional to the amount of oxygen around the cancer cells.” That means that the more oxygen, the slower the cancer spreads. Conversely, the less oxygen, the faster the cancer spreads. If cancer cells get enough oxygen, they will die! Hydrogen peroxide kills cancer cells, because cancer cells do not have the mechanism to break down the hydrogen peroxide and stop it from doing its work.

The key to curing cancer with hydrogen peroxide is getting ENOUGH hydrogen peroxide INSIDE the cancer cells. There is a scientific description of this: Proteolytic enzymes, also called pancreatic enzymes, literally cut apart the thick protein coating that covers cancer cells, so the immune system can recognize the cells as cancerous. Natriumbicarbonaat is niet alleen een uitstekend middel voor natuurlijke chemotherapie, omdat het O2 niveaus door verhoogde alkaliteit aan de cellen verhoogt, maar het is ook een van de meest fundamentele middelen tegen nierziekte.

Nieuw onderzoek door Britse wetenschappers van het Royal London Hospital laat zien dat natriumbicarbonaat de voortgang van chronische nierziekte drastisch kan vertragen. We hebben geen duizend jaar aan tests nodig om iets eenvoudigs als water te begrijpen en het is exact hetzelfde met bicarbonaat, wat altijd aanwezig is in de beste drinkwateren. Bicarbonaat werkt om de ATPase stimuleren omdat het daar direct op inwerkt.

Het eenvoudige huishoudelijke product dat wordt gebruikt voor het bakken, schoonmaken, de behandleing van bijensteken, de behandeling van astma, kanker en zure oprispingen is zo effectief bij de behandeling van nierziekte dat het voorkomt dat patiënten aan nier machines moeten worden gezet.

De bevindingen zijn gepubliceerd in het Journal of the American Society of Nephrology. Bicarbonaat is een echt sterk universeel geconcentreerd geneesmiddel met hoge voedingswaarde, dat effectief werkt in veel klinische situaties die we normaal niet zouden bedenken. John, een dialyse technicus in hetzelfde instituut als Dr. Hariachar, die vroeger zelf aan dialyse werd blootgesteld gedurende 2 jaar als gevolg van nierfalen, zag dat zijn nieren wonderbaarlijk weer gingen functioneren tot het punt waar dialyse niet meer nodig was. Hij stelt dat hij orale doses natriumbicarbonaat kreeg voorgeschreven gedurende zijn behandeling, en neemt het nog steeds dagelijks om herhalingen van nierfalen te voorkomen. Dr. Hariachar handhaaft echter dat niet iedereen geholpen zal kunnen worden door het nemen van bicarbonaat. Hij zegt dat die patiënten die moeite hebben met het uitscheiden van zuren, zelfs met dialyse met behulp van een bicarbonaat dialysaat bad, dat, “orale bicarbonaat het verschil maakt.”

Zuur-base balans is het netto resultaat van twee processen, eerst het verwijderen van bicarbonaat na waterstofionen productie van het metabolisme van voedingsbestanddelen; tweede, de synthese van het “nieuwe” bicarbonaat door de nieren.

Het wordt gesteld dat normale volwassenen die gewone Westerse diëten volgen chronische, laaggradige acidose hebben die toeneemt met de leeftijd. Deze overmaat aan zuur of acidose, wordt beschouwd als een bijdrage aan vele ziekten en dragen bij aan het verouderingsproces. Acidose komt vaak voor wanneer het lichaam niet voldoende bicarbonaat ionen (of andere alkalische stoffen) produceert om de zuren te neutraliseren in het lichaam voortkomend uit de stofwisseling door bijvoorbeeld het drinken van zeer zure dranken zoals cola, en we zien zelfs verslagen over gebotteld mineraal water dat te zuur is.

Acid-buffering via base suppletie is een van de belangrijkste rollen van dialyse.
