De consumptie van suikerhoudende dranken is sinds de zeventiger jaren verdubbeld. Bijna 30 procent van de Amerikaanse volwassenen lijdt aan vetzucht.

Drie nieuwe studies die afgelopen weekend in de Verenigde Staten zijn gepubliceerd, komen voor het eerst met hard bewijs voor een verband tussen zoete frisdranken en de obesitas-epidemie.

De consumptie van suikerhoudende dranken is sinds de zeventiger jaren verdubbeld. Bijna 30 procent van de Amerikaanse volwassenen lijdt aan vetzucht.

Dat stellen onderzoekers van een studie die is gepubliceerd in het gezaghebbende medisch-wetenschappelijke tijdschrift The New England Journal of Medicine.

GewichtstoenameBij de eerste studie waren 33.000 Amerikaanse mannen en vrouwen betrokken. De wetenschappers toonden aan dat genen die het gewicht reguleren worden aangetast door het drinken van suikerhoudende frisdranken waardoor de kans op overgewicht toeneemt.

Ook de andere twee studies tonen aan dat suikerhoudende dranken zoals frisdrank, limonade en vruchtensappen een grote rol spelen bij de gewichtstoename van kinderen. Nederlandse kinderen krijgen door suikerhoudende dranken gemiddeld 48 gram suiker per dag binnen. Amerikaanse kinderen consumeren zelfs 75 gram suiker per dag in frisdranken.

Uit onderzoek door de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam onder 641 kinderen tussen 4 en 11 jaar oud bleek dat kinderen die hun dagelijkse suikerhoudende dranken niet meer kregen na anderhalf jaar precies één kilo lichter waren dan leeftijdsgenoten die ze wel bleven drinken. Dikke Amerikaanse pubers vielen 1,9 kilo in een jaar tijd af door minder vloeibaar suiker tot zich te nemen.

Niet vrijwillig

Dr. Sonia Caprio van de Yale-universiteit schreef in The New England Journal of Medicine dat ‘deze onderzoeken richtlijnen en politieke besluiten moeten stimuleren die de consumptie van suikerhoudende frisdrank beperken, teneinde de toename van overgewicht bij kinderen te beperken’. “Deze drie studies laten zien dat calorieën in suikerhoudende drankjes er terdege toe doen,” voegde ze toe.

Raymond Gianotten van de branchevereniging FSW Frisdranken, Waters en Sappen liet weten dat de industrie het aanbod van vloeibare suiker niet vrijwillig gaat beperken. “We halen gesuikerde dranken voor kinderen niet uit de supermarktschappen, consumenten kunnen ook voor light kiezen,” zei hij.Bronnen: AP, AFP, NRC.nl

The scientist told Hudson there was nothing, although after removal of the individual elements a staggering 98% of the material was still left!
